On Protests and Taking a Knee

  1. I support everybody’s right to free speech.
  2. The NFL is a business and players are employees. There is no right to free speech on the job regardless of the impact it has on the company’s bottom line.
  3. The president of the United States should not be demanding people be fired and using his office to chill speech. That’s entirely inappropriate.
  4. Taking a knee is a stupid idea. The act of kneeling can easily be perceived as disrespectful. This isn’t rocket science. Stand up and raise a fist. Didn’t you study history? 1968. Mexico City. Or better yet: Stand up and lock arms with your teammates as both a protest and a show of solidarity. THAT would be unassailable. But instead, you’ve chosen to play into the perception that you are disrespecting the flag.
  5. The American left is pushing “take a knee” when it’s politically toxic and ineffective. This is a divisive approach. There are more effective strategies. If the goal really is dialogue and societal reforms, there are better ways to get there.
  6. I believe police brutality and unnecessary use of lethal force by police are problems that we, as a society, need to address.
  7. Staying in the locker room is a stupid idea. Hiding or sitting out difficult situations is not a viable strategy in life.
